The Evil that Men Do

In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar the character of Mark Antony says, “The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones”. This statement is sad and I believe accurate. As the date of May 21, 2011 draws near the attention of certain folks within Christendom will be riveted upon the prophecies of a man named Harold Camping. Mr. Camping’s organization, Family Radio is sponsoring ads all over the country announcing that Judgment Day is coming on May 21—the Bible guarantees it! Camping’s disciples are so confident that one has asserted that if the world is still here on May 22 then the Bible is wrong! It may be easy to lump Camping along with other harmless crackpots who has made false predictions throughout history. We may hope that his followers will awake the next day and grieve that they ever fell for such nonsense. But history tells us that cults often arise from such deceivers. The harm that Camping has already brought to numerous churches around the world does not allow us to call him harmless or merely duped. He is an evil man propogating evil things and sadly that evil will linger in this world long after he faces judgment.

Matthew 24:36 – “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.

I guess the sign of judgment coming isn’t bad… except for the calculations. It is amazing how men twist the scriptures to their own destruction (2 Peter 3:16) even in light of CRYSTAL CLEAR biblical teaching. The sad thing is that he does this in the name of Christ, so when people like Harold Camping predict the date of Christ’s coming and the day they predict passes, they are just promoting a great apostasy of people who will eventually say that Christ is not coming back and that the Judgment of God is a joke. Christ will come, but not until there is a great apostasy… Harold Camping and others will bring this to fruition. “Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 2 Thessalonians 2:3”

2 Peter 3:1-10 – 1 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us,[a] the apostles of the Lord and Savior, 3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us,[b] not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

May 21st is a good date for our annual church work day…serving the established church by cleaning our building and spending time in fellowship. Maybe we should declare it “Love the Church day.”
